Materials

What we build in, and why it matters

The board behind the door decides how long a cupboard lasts. Here's what we use and where.

Melamine-faced board

The workhorse of South African cabinetry and the material behind most of what we make. A chipboard core with a decorative melamine surface bonded to it — durable, wipeable and available in hundreds of colours and textured wood-grains. We build carcasses in 16mm throughout with solid backs, not 3mm hardboard.

Moisture-resistant board

Specified as standard for kitchen base units around the sink and dishwasher, scullery runs and every bathroom vanity we make. It isn't waterproof, but it survives the leaks and spills that would swell a standard board permanently.

MDF for sprayed and profiled doors

Where a door needs a routed shaker profile, a curved edge or a sprayed duco finish, MDF is the right substrate. It machines crisply and takes paint evenly in a way that chipboard cannot.

Solid timber and veneer

Reserved for feature doors, framed detailing and one-off furniture pieces rather than whole kitchens. Beautiful, more expensive, and it moves with humidity — so we use it where that character is the point.

If you want the underlying numbers, our guide to what cupboard board actually costs in South Africa sets out current board prices and explains why a R1,000 sheet becomes a R4,700 fitted metre.

Finishes & Hardware

The details that decide how it ages

Four finish families cover almost everything we make: standard melamine, textured wood-grain, wrap doors for profiled and shaker styles, and sprayed duco in matt or gloss. Each sits at a different price point and each behaves differently in daily use — our finishes guide compares them honestly, including which ones show fingerprints.

Underneath the finish, three things determine whether a cupboard is still tight in fifteen years:

  • Edging. Matched 1mm or 2mm ABS on every visible edge, applied hot and trimmed flush. Edging is where water gets in and where cheap work shows first.
  • Hinges and runners. Soft-close as standard, not as an upsell. These are the most-used moving parts in the house.
  • Internals. Adjustable shelving, proper drawer boxes, pull-out bins, corner mechanisms and pantry fittings — specified around what you actually store.

Everything is made to your dimensions in our own Gauteng workshop and installed by our own team, so what's drawn is what arrives.

Questions, Answered

About our products

Everything we make is built to order for your specific space — we don't stock standard-size units. That's what allows cupboards to run floor to ceiling and sit flush against walls that are rarely straight. If a ready-made unit would genuinely serve you better, we'll say so; our comparison of ready-made versus custom cupboards covers when each makes sense.

16mm throughout for carcasses, shelving and doors, with solid backs rather than thin hardboard. Moisture-resistant board is standard for kitchen base units near water and for all bathroom vanities. Heavier or wider shelving is specified thicker where the span requires it.

Often, yes — if the décor is a current line we can order the same board. Discontinued ranges can't be matched exactly, in which case sprayed duco is usually the best route because the colour can be mixed to match rather than selected from a catalogue.

Soft-close hinges are standard on our cupboard doors, and soft-close drawer systems are standard on drawer units. Specialist internals such as pull-out bins, spice racks, corner mechanisms and pantry systems are quoted as separate line items so you can choose what's worth having.

Yes — on both the product and the workmanship. Because we manufacture and install with our own team, there's no argument about whether a fault came from the factory or the fitter. If something isn't right, we come back and fix it.
